the meaning of gold in feng shui

In feng shui, every colour is considered to have a different energy (Qi / Chi) vibration. Colour can be used in any space as a great way to rebalance and harmonise the energy of your surroundings so that it positively supports you and your lifestyle.

Gold is symbolic of abundance and vitality. It’s infused with the luminous energy of the sun and is a warm and welcoming colour to use around your home.

Along with red, gold is a very auspicious colour in Chinese culture and it’s strongly associated with money and wealth. To attract greater prosperity and abundance in your life, you should place gold accents or accessories in the ‘prosperity area’ of your home or an individual room. This prosperity zone is found in the far left area of your home in relation to your main front entrance or the far left area or corner of a room when viewed from the room doorway.

Traditional feng shui practice recommends using a golden laughing Buddha, a lucky gold waving cat figurine or a set of gold Chinese coins to attract good fortune. In modern feng shui design, however, simple everyday gold accessories and interior design features will have the same impact. So you can use gold jewellery, gold lamp bases, gilt-edged pictures and mirrors, or fabrics and covers with gold printed or woven patterns.

For crystal and gemstone lovers, I recommend placing a beautiful piece of iron pyrite (Fools Gold) in the ‘prosperity zones’ and also the areas of your home where you tend to focus on money matters. This could be your home office, a desk area, or perhaps or the kitchen table where you typically deal with any family bills and accounts.

Adding touches of gold can also be very helpful in your main bedroom where it brings the positive energy of warmth and love, without the need to resort to cliched romantic reds and pinks. Pale gold accents used on walls, fabrics or accessories, particularly in combination with the colour white or silver, will introduce a very peaceful and serene feel to a bedroom space.

my feng shui clients and the colour gold

When I suggest using gold at home many clients are concerned that it will look overly opulent, Byzantine and far too bling! I assure them that gold is not just for Christmas and that it can bring a warm sophistication to their home if applied carefully.

The colour gold has connotations of heaviness and brassy yellowness for some people, and this is certainly is far cry from the neutral, sleek and simple interiors that many of my clients favour. I help banish any negative preconceptions about using gold by introducing clients to the many beautiful shades of soft pale golds and rose golds, which are far cry from the traditional, darker ‘old gold’ colour.

Clients can also be daunted by the prospect of using metallics such as gold in wallpaper or paint. I show them that less is more. Choosing a small feature wall, chimney breast or discrete area of panelling to apply a gold colour can have a big impact on the warmth and richness of the entire space.

If there is still a reluctance to using gold infused wall paints and papers, gold accessories can be a gentle way to ease a client into this colour. Subtle gold accents in wall art, light fittings, ornaments, picture and mirror surrounds, and fabric covers all work wonders. Combine this gold with white, silver and black for a very sophisticated look or add small pops of bright colours for a more contemporary feel.

feng shui advice for using gold

Boost your prosperity zone: A simple feng shui ‘design cure’ for attracting more money and abundance into your life is by adding a gold feature or accessory to the main wealth and prosperity zone of your home (this is the room or space in the far left corner of your home relative to your front entrance) or to the area when you typically plan and organise your finances.

Pick a gold to match your mood: Do you want a more traditional and cosy feel? If so go for shades of dark yellow or olive golds. Or would you prefer a more modern look? Then choose a pale creamy gold or rose gold shade as an accent to white.

Use for vitality and warmth: Adding a touch of gold colour to dull and lacklustre north-facing rooms or corridors will revitalise the energy of the space and create a much more welcoming environment.

Start small: It’s easy to go overboard with gold and a little goes a long way in terms of impact. Add gold features and accessories gradually and in small doses. Notice the difference it makes to the character and feel of your room. If you’re happy with the results then add a little more – but carefully!

a simple wealth-boosting feng shui exercise

To attract more prosperity and abundance into your life, add a splash of gold to the ‘prosperity zone’ in your home (see above) and in places such as your desk area or home-office, which are connected with your financial planning or money-making activities.

You can introduce the colour gold by using metallic paint or gold patterned wallpaper on a feature wall, or by adding some pizzazz to a dull piece of furniture with gold paint or gold leaf, or with more subtle hints of gold in room fabrics, lamps, ornaments, frames, and wall art.

This exercise doesn’t need to be confined to your home. You could switch your conservative back purse for a sleek and stylish gold version or invest in a gold coloured piggy bank. If you’re attending an important meeting relating to your career or family finances you could also experiment with wearing a statement piece of gold jewellery or gold accessories.

Now keep an ‘Energy Diary’ to track the results:

Before you make the gold design changes make a note of your thoughts about money, wealth and prosperity and your current financial situation.

Then, 1-month after making the changes, reappraise your finances and your general feelings about money – has anything changed? Do you have a greater sense of ease, relaxation and security about money? Do you have a heightened feeling of abundance and flow in your life?

At the end of the exercise, you will be able to compare the ‘before’ and ‘after’ results of your gold design change.
